My Review on Benefit’s They’re Real! Mascara – The good, the bad and the ugly
This was a totally spontaneous purchase. I had run into Ulta and the Benefit They’re Real! Mascara was front and center, staring at me, and I just grabbed a box because there was so much hype and publicity on them and the reviews seemed pretty good.
The price is $23.00, which didn’t seem that bad to me if it actually does what it claims!
Here are my lashes with nothing on them:
According to Benefit:
-Position wand horizontally and wiggle from side to side and base to tip to achieve maximum volume, length, and lift.
-Hold wand vertically and stroke upward to curl and separate.
-Layer generously as desired.
-Please read the ingredient list on the packaging of your product to be sure it is appropriate for your personal use.
Here are my first-time results after 3 coats of Benefit’s They’re Real!.
At this point, I’m not real thrilled with the mascara.
What it is:
A jet-black mascara that lengthens, curls, volumizes, lifts, and separates lashes for a spectacular “out-to-here” look.
What it does:
This breakthrough bestseller reveals lashes you never knew you had! The specially designed brush features staggered bristles that grab close to the root, boosting length and volume beyond belief. The custom-domed tip uses precision bristles to lift, define, and curl even your tiniest lashes. With a glossy, jet-black, long-wearing formula, you’ll flaunt luxurious, silky lashes that won’t smudge, clump, or dry out. True story!

- 100% saw long-wearing results*
The Good: I love how black my lashes are with this. It’s a good formula, but you definitely have to put the work in. At the very least, use a lash curler. The formulation is so heavy, however, it tends to just bring the lashes down otherwise.
The packaging is pretty nice and I like the silverish look although I have never bought anything for the way it looked on my counter:
I had no allergic reaction to this and my eyes are pretty sensitive.
The Bad: There’s a learning curve. I think that you have to really play with it to find the perfect way to use it. I do think that if you do that, people will think they’re false lashes.
The Ugly: This stuff is ridiculously hard to get off. I have to use makeup wipes, then my cleanser and I’ll still wake up with the racoon look the next morning, the morning after that, and, well…you get the idea.
Really…I’m just not loving it at this point. I felt I needed 3 coats for it to really ‘take’ and this left me with clumpy, spikey lashes.
UPDATE: Well, I decided to give my eyelashes another chance with ‘THEY’RE REAL!”.
The only difference is that I took the time to use a eyelash curler and lashcomb.
Well, so I curled my lashes, I followed the directions exactly, used a Lashcomb and here are my eyes. Better than before; albeit way too clumpy. I still need to work on it. I love that it worked pretty well on my bottom lashes.
What can I say? It’s not the best yet, but I think that each time it gets a little bit easier. Also, wipe off the wand before each application. (I don’t know why my left eye looks like nothing’s on them; I can only blame it on my horrible ability to take a picture.)
When I went to put it on vertically, I put that mascara wand right in my eye. I’ve got to remember that for next time.
Then, the wand fell right on the bathroom floor (ummmm real hygenic) and then I had to pick it up to wash it and got mascara on my favorite shirt. hands, and basically everywhere but my eyes. I’m really bummed now. I loved that shirt. I mean, am I just clumsy or is that container really slippery?
I didn’t think the difference was THAT GREAT, but no fewer than 4 people stopped me to tell me how great I was looking. The ONLY thing that was really different was the mascara. Is it possible that wearing mascara could do me that much good? I mean, I’m usually basically walking around like I just got out of bed and threw some clothes on.
So….although I am not really a mascara kind of gal, I will continue to use it on special days.
I am still not having a problem with sensitivity which is really unusual for me. This mascara is also really long lasting with no running.
So….I’ve got to give this a B+ now because of the reaction this mascara brought on.
