Summary of the First Two Weeks of my Juicing Diet

This is a summary of the first 2 weeks of my juicing fast and diet. For a day-by day account of how I am doing along the way, please go to My Juicing Journey.

Disclaimer – I am not a doctor, nurse, health professional or dietician. I know nothing about how this juice diet is supposed to work except for what I’ve read from other sites and made up on my own. So..take that for what it is.  It is up to you to get the OK from your doctor before beginning a juice fast or diet and this is not recommended for children, pregnant or nursing women.

This summary covers my Juicing Fast (diet) for the last 16 days from December 3 – December 19 2012.

The juicing fast rules say that you need to get your body ready for the diet for about a week (I think) so you get slowly used to it.

I took about 3 days with just 1 drink of juice a day and decided to try to go full boar before I lost my nerve and the juicer just became another thing in the back of the closet.

In those 3 days of having only 1 juice, I lost 1.5 pounds, which surprised me.

So, truly beginning serious juicing in earnest began 12/6/2012, I weighed in at 186.5

Here is a breakdown of my juicing experience for the past 2 weeks: THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE UGLY of Juicing. (I am no longer going to call it the juice fast because my body just didn’t let me go with just juicing, plus I was worried about prior gastro problems that I didn’t want to aggravate.

THE GOOD

.  Counting the 3 days of getting ready for the juicing diet, I have lost 6.5 pounds in 16 Days!

2.  My hypoglycemia is virtually gone.

3,  I have no need for a sleeping pill at night anymore. That benefit started within the first few days.

4.  My skin is really clear and, even my husband, noticed it which is pretty amazing.

5.  I wake up in the morning refreshed.

6,  I definitely have more energy and I don’t feel that overwhelming need for a nap in the middle of the day.

7,  I’m much calmer

8.   I just feel really good and am considering trying to quit smoking again.

9. My mind seems clearer

10.  I have lost 2 inches off my waist.

11. Outside of maybe a little bit of chicken or a tiny amount of turkey, I have lost all taste for meat. (I used to eat steaks and burgers at least 4 times a week)

12.  Juicers tend to be the most wonderful people. They are ready to share their tip and tricks and their favorite recipes and I just love the juicing community.

13.  You do definitely learn how to shop to make the costs somewhat manageable. You look for sales and seasonal fruits and veggies.
14.  You will get used to the taste of the juices; even the bad ones.

15. There are tons of resources on the web and from the juicing community.

THE BAD

1. It’s pretty expensive in the beginning because you need to buy a strong, good juicer plus your first grocery trip will knock your socks off at how much fruits and vegetable in bulk cost.

2.  The Juicer.  You will get to hate the sight of the juicer. It’s got to be set up which isn’t too bad, but cleaning it is a pain in the ass. It’s all these parts and you have to soak the filter for 10 minutes in soapy water. It’s a big mess in the kitchen and your hands start to get really rough from touching all that acidic fruit and having your hands in water all the time, washing the fruits and vegetables.

3.  If you are feeding other members of your family, not only do you have to make their meal and watch them eat it, but you have to do the half hour of juicing and, before you know it, your dishes have piled up like you see on the show “Hoarders”.

4.  I didn’t take the proper amount of time of easing into juicing. Thus, I think I felt the bad effects more than someone who properly followed the rules.  (I was extremely hungry and irritable for more days than those who took the proper amount of time.)

5.  For me, at least, constipation was an issue. I try to get as much fiber in as possible.  I am using flax seeds and drinking my myralax at least once a day.
6.  I cannot, honestly, call this a juice fast. I am supplementing it with some yogurt, an occasional salad, a tablespoon of peanut butter.

7.  Some juice recipes are so disgusting, but because you paid so much for the produce, you drink it anyway.
8. After watching Joe Cross in his documentary, “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead), I’m a little dishearted at only losing 6.5 pounds, since he seemed to be losing that much a day. (Only a slight exaggeration.)

THE UGLY

.  I know that I need to exercise while doing this and in 16 days, I would say I took a 15-minute walk only 3 times.  I think this is the #1 reason why I didn’t lose more weight!

2. I drink nowhere near the amount of water I should be drinking.

3. I am not on a total juice fast. I really don’t think that my body, which is really wonky in the gastro area culd handle it. I do, however, try to eat only something healthy in between juices.

4.  While I’ve easily gotten used to not eating meat, chocolate is my crack. It’s that time of the year where friends send you candy and cakes and that is what I cannot leave alone. I know that I cannot just leave it alone. I ate all my candy and when my husband fell asleep, I ate all his.

5.  Grocery shopping now takes forever. (Plus, I’ve got to open those stuck-together plastic bags that take forever to open.) I’m sure that’s not the case for organized juicers, but I just grab a bunch of stuff I think might go well together.
SUMMARY

Am I glad I started juicing? ABSOLUTELY!
Will I continue juicing?  ABSOLUTELY!

I don’t really understand the chemistry, but in 2 weeks I’ve gone from eating 1/2 a pizza with 2 chocolate bavarian cream donuts before going to sleep to juicing at least 2X a day,  with healthy treats in between.

I was skeptical when I saw the documentary, “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead”. I thought there had to be  an exaggeration as to how people felt so much better in such a short time.
However, as a person who hates diets, craves sweets and carbs,
this really has been nothing short of a miracle.

The Status of My Juicing Journey for 2015 Is Not Good Right Now.

I’m starting a new year and that means trying to get a grip on my health…again. I know that I’ve been going on and on about it year after year and I have yet to lose the weight, Actually, I think I lost a pound and a half.

I understand that you probably have no faith in me at this time.

The comments I’ve received on this site have not been for naught as I read them and put them into my mental file as something I should listen to and I have listened. Unfortunately, it seems I am too far gone to get back into shape now, if ever.

It’s freezing here in Petticoat Junction and I don’t want to take a chance on getting a cold so I’m not walking yet.

Furthermore, it’s only Day 2 of my New Year. I’ve got to ease into this thing.

I told everyone that I was going to go back to Juicing (Rebooting with Joe Cross) and it’s already day 2.

I’ve also made a new friend here and I’ve been hanging out with her and sometimes I really like her and sometimes I just want to kill her and since I mostly want to kill her, I’ll have to give her up. She would have been good as a walking partner had she not been so obnoxious,

So, Frank, my trainer (I just kind of made him my official trainer, and never let him have a say in it) , wants to know the status of said Juice Journey.

Well….Frank….The fact is that I will have to do this in steps.

STEP I:

I, will, see if my husband would like a smoothie because I have the ingredients. Banana, yogurt, strawberries and something else I can’t remember.

Anyhoo…..Here I sit with my hair that I’ve lightened with Color Oops   in the hope that my bald spots don’t show up as much, and I’m wondering which ailment to choose to tackle first. I’ve got the high blood pressure, the high cholesterol, the probable stroke from smoking my whole life, and on and on and on.

So..here I am on January 2, 2015 wondering if my husband wants a smoothie and trying to figure out my next step.

Day 1 of My Moderate Juicing Reboot – Discouraging

Today is Day 1 of the Reboot of my Moderate Juicing Diet

I’ve been gearing up for a week to start this day; I have had at least 2 juices a day while I supplemented it with salad and some protein. (Although a couple times I slipped. I ate a whole bag of sunflower nuts and some low sugar stuff that I probably shouldn’t have had.)

Yesterday, I had taken a walk, finally, with Lulu the shi-tzu, and that’s more exercise than I usually get.

I took my weight today and, crushingly, I had PUT ON A POUND, I mean, seriously, WTH?  So now I’m pissed off that, after all that juice, I’m down only 1 pound.

However, Al, my counselor on this journey (whether he wants to be or not) , asked why I thought I had gained a pound, I said that I was probably making muscle after that walk with Lulu.

He said that he doubted that I could put on a pound of muscle from a 15 minute walk. Well, he can say what he thinks and I can say what I think.

My body is now at 187.5 exactly. CRAP!

So, I was running around doing the last minute gifts and I had no time to buy more produce and was left with the remaining food in the fridge.

So this is what I had and all I can say is:  NEVER, EVER MAKE THIS JUICE!

So, in case Al or anyone else thinks that I’m not taking this seriously, I have already had 1 of these juices and it is HORRIBLE.

It was horrible. However, now I have a problem because I don’t have produce for tomorrow so I’ll have to have cereal in the a.m. and get my produce later.

It’s clear that I’m just not being organized yet. Still, for me, I’m being very organized.

I’ll drink one more juice of that stuff today,  It’s so hard to have to constantly have a huge surplus of veggies on hand.

Any people out there that really like kale?

I had no juice today because I didn’t plan ahead and so had to eat what was in the house:

Breakfast: cereal and milk

Lunch:  greek orzo (I don’t know what orzo is, but it looked healthy)

Dinner: Small amount of pasta with tomato sauce

I made my way to the store and purchased another $1,000.00 of produce. I had seen this recipe and it really sounded good: Cranberry Apple Ginger Juice.

Cranberry Apple Ginger Juice

I found it on the Rebootwithjoe website.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups (240 g) fresh cranberries
  • 2 apples (green or red)
  • 2 in (5 cm) piece of ginger
  • 2 kale leaves (Tuscan cabbage)

Directions:

  1. Wash all produce well.
  2. Core apples.
  3. Juice all ingredients and enjoy.
  • Nutrition per serving:

Yields and nutrutional information are estimated and will vary depending on product size and juicer used.

As I was making it, tripling the ingredients so I could get three mason jars full, I tasted it and it was AWFUL! It tasted so acidic. Maybe it just needs to be ice cold?  I don’t know. All I know is that I am never making it again.

The kale and cramberry combination was really rugged.  I ended up using about 8 apples and that still barely made it edible.

Still looking for going full juice and salads on Monday.

UPDATE:  It actually did not taste bad when it was ice-cold and I also put a little bit of ice cubes in there. This would be really good in the summer, I think.

So, that’s where I’m at here and I was really happy with the 2 pounds lost and will weigh myself again tomorrow.

Day 4 of My Modified Juicing Fast is Going Well With 2 Pounds Gone!

I’m on Day 4 of My Modified Juicing Fast and it’s going well.  I have Lost 2 pounds.

So, I’m doing a modified juicing fast (modified because I have health issues) and, so far, I’m pretty happy.

Yesterday I had only 1 juice left so I drank that and I’ll go tomorrow to the store for my huge order of veggies.

So, I’ve been supplementing the juices with healthy alternatives like peanut butter and popcorn. I’m sure that to you purists, that is pretty awful. However, for me, a person with no qualms about eating half a pie, this is really good.

I’m very happy with the 2 pound loss.

What can I say?  For some reason, those juices taste better to me now than a year ago.

Of course that juicer is such a pain in the ass. It just takes forever to get it set up, juice and cleaned and put away.

I’m definitely NOT yet drinking enough water and no exercise.

Day 2 of My Modified Juicing Diet Went Better Today

Day 2 of my Modified Juicing Diet went Better than Yesterday

I woke up and was pretty disgusted with myself after not drinking even one of those juices that I made for yesterday.

Today I woke up to my coffee (which I don’t intend to ever give up) and an English Muffin.

When I got hungry about 11:00 a.m., I had one of my 3 juices already made up and I’ve got to tell you, it tasted pretty good, I’m trying to think of why.

This is what I’m thinking happened:  I drank it when it was really, really cold. Also the pears I put in made a total difference. Also, no Kale. I just can’t abide that stuff.

For dinner tonite, I had some fish and I’m going to drink another juice.

The evening is the hardest time for me so we’ll see how it goes,

I’m looking for some great juice sites that I can promote in order to get us the best ideas out there.

I know that on my last juicing endeavor, I had alot of help from other juicers and I hope the same will hold true his time.

Well, I’m very happy with the way things have gone today.

1st Juicing Day Did Not Go as Planned and it Wasn’t My Fault!

I was to start my 1st Day of Juicing and, so far, it is not going as Planned.

I woke up knowing I would have coffee without sugar and that I would have Kashi Go Lean cereal and milk for breakfast… then juice the rest of the day.

I  juiced last night and it came to almost 3 full mason jars.

After breakfast, my husband remembered that we didn’t get to celebrate our anniversary because we were both sick. He thought it would be a good idea to go out for lunch today to a nice place and I readily agreed.  I mean, I was concerned because once you have a lunch with all your favorite foods, how do you drink what tastes like dirt? I said I would start the fast later today or tomorrow.

We were  planning out our day and we needed to get to True Value and get a garbage pail (???) can (????)  I’m not sure what they’re called when you get one for in the home. You don’t get a garbage pail, do you?

Anyhoo….we did that and we’re driving and my husband drops me off to get the pail and then we drove to the restaurant, Yes, that was certainly romantic. I don’t think either one of us was thrilled with the meal but it was nice getting out of the house finally. So we sit in a booth and when it came time to get out of said booth, my husband, who has lost a lot of weight  just jumps out and I literally could not get out of that dumb ass booth and had to do one of those sideway jobs.

We then went to the car and I literally fell INTO the car.  I tripped over the little thingy that is between the seat and outside. I broke 2 nails and was really pissed.

Anyway, I’m trying to decide whether to drink any juice at all today. I’m thinking I should just  start so I could say I started on Monday, December 15.

I weighed in today at 188.5 pounds so in 1 night, I gained 1/2 of a pound.

Sucks to be me.

Back to a Juicing Fast and Hoping the Magic Returns and I regain my Health

A Year of Several Illnesses has Sent Me Back To Juicing and I’m Hoping the Magic Returns.

So, I’m going back to Rebootwithjoe.com. In case you didn’t know, Joe Cross and his documentary ‘Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead’ has started a revolution in extolling the benefits of doing a juicing fast or a Juicing Reboot.

There are so many things that have happened since the last time I juiced that I am embarrassed to say that, except for quitting smoking,  i have not done myself well at all.

I’m not eating well and I fell into my bad habits and my health has deteriorated. I don’t exercise, I eat a bad diet and am just doing basically whatever I want,

I’m going to do it right this time by easing into the diet and staying away from the sugary fruit smoothies.

My weight has, amazingly, stayed the same,  basically at 189.5 pounds.

I’ve remembered pretty much about how good I felt on the diet; albeit I was always hungry which indicates to me that I didn’t do it right.

I have to do the moderate diet because I have way too many health problems now to live on just juice.

Most of my health problems came about through smoking and eating too much. All of this could have been avoided probably, however I chose to live a very hedonistic lifestyle and now I’m getting paid back. I have no one to blame but myself.

I went today and bought some of my staples:  Kale, cucumbers, carrots, cantaloupe, nuts.  I probably spent about $30.00. It was cheaper than usual because I had been eating fresh salads. I bought this great salad spinner from Bed Bath and Beyond  ( have no affiliation with them) and if I could just tell you….it’s awesome. This salad comes out so crisp and fresh tasting.

I bought the OXO Steel Large Salad Spinner and really love it.

This sells for $49.99 and is worth every cent.

So…today I will do the juicing for tomorrow and ease into it.

I brought out the old Breville, cleaned it off and started juicing for tomorrow.

GOING BACK TO JUICING – DAY 1

Juicing has has been so advantageous to me in the past that I’ve decided to do it once again, however, this time I will ease into it.

If you’ve been following my site, you know that I have had to do a modified diet, due to some health issues, yet I still lost more weight than I had in the last 10 years.

Here is my information for 2 WEEK  and for 4 WEEK progress. As you can see, this diet really did help with alot more issues than just weight loss.

I began this time with going to the store where I purchased:

Huge bag of carrots

2 sweet potatoes

2 bags of nuts

One large bag of Swiss Chard

Celery

Strawberries

Blackberries

Large bag of organic apples

Carton of fresh mangos.

Bag of lettuce mix

TOTAL COST:  $43.96

What I missed getting:

Pineapple (which just makes everything taste so much better.)

So…how much juicing have I actually done today? NONE. ZERO. ZIP.

I’m getting into the spirit of it and have even downloaded some good juicing recipes.

So, yes, this is officially DAY 1 and I am starting out at the frequent weight of 184.5.

Progress:

1) Set up juicer

2)  Bought lots of healthy foods and vegetables and fruits

3) Ate a nice, healthy banana. (baby steps)

I have gone back to Reboot with Joe (Joe Cross’ website) which is just packed with great ideas, recipes and and an active juicing community. You can add yourself onto someone else’s juicing journey or begin one of your own.

I have been spending alot of time on Joe Cross’ site, as I have forgotten so much of what I had learned before.

So…what have I done starting today?

I ate a banana.  I know that sounds pretty minute, but you don’t understand how much I detest fruit and vegetables.

So, I feel like I’m on a good path and am feeling pretty good about myself.

After feeling pretty good after my modified Juicing Diet after seeing the movie, “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead”, I an Now Reading about the Possible Negative Affects of Juicing

Is juicing dangerous? According to e-how.com:

Foodborne Illness

  • Homemade juice can make you sick.  Commercially-available juices are  pasteurized to kill any harmful bacteria, reports FoodSafety.gov.  You can cut  your risk of foodborne illness by thoroughly washing fruits and vegetables  before you put them through your juicer.  Wash inedible peels too, so bacteria  won’t transfer from the peel to your hands and then to the flesh of the fruit.   Use special care when serving homemade juice to expectant moms, young children,  the elderly, or anyone with immune system problems.

Injury

  • Not only can the juices produced at home be dangerous, the machines used to  produce them can be too.  The Consumer Products Safety Commission reports that  some juicers have been recalled because they flew apart during use, spraying  sharp pieces of metal into the air.  Even a good-quality juicer can be dangerous  if not used correctly.  Read and follow all manufacturer instructions and do not  operate a juicer without safety features such as hand-guards or food tubes that  keep your fingers away from the blades.

  • Fruit and vegetable juices can help you get the nutrients your body needs,  but you shouldn’t use them as a replacement for whole fruits and vegetables.   Mayo Clinic registered dietitian Katherine Zeratsky reports juices have  significantly less fiber than whole foods, and inadequate fiber consumption can  put you at risk for weight gain, high blood sugar, and heart problems.  To  prevent this, make whole fruits and vegetables a regular part of your  meals.
